ZZyzx, the last word

BAKER, CALIFORNIA

Zzyzx Road, a rather curious and compelling name, is a real, paved road in California's Mojave Desert. It stretches for approximately 4.5 miles, connecting Interstate 15 to the defunct Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Resort. The road's unusual name, the last in the English alphabet, was deliberately chosen in 1944 by Curtis Howe Springer, the self-proclaimed "last of the old-time medicine men," who established the resort. He hoped that the unique name would guarantee the place would be the last listing in any directory. Today, while the resort is no longer operational and is now a field research station for California State University, the road's name continues to fascinate and draw attention, making it a popular stop for travelers seeking a quirky photo opportunity along their desert journey.
